How Often Should You Get Your Carpets Cleaned by a Professional?

Carpets are a significant investment in any home, providing comfort and aesthetic appeal. However, they also tend to accumulate dirt, dust, and allergens over time. While regular vacuuming can help maintain their appearance and hygiene, professional cleaning is essential for deep cleansing and extending their lifespan. But how often should you get your carpets professionally cleaned? The answer depends on several factors, including foot traffic, presence of pets, and
carpet material.

McMillan's-Cleaning-and-Restoration

Factors Influencing Cleaning Frequency

Foot Traffic

  • High Traffic Areas: Hallways, living rooms, and entryways experience the most foot traffic. For
these areas, professional cleaning is recommended every 3-6 months to remove embedded dirt
    and prevent wear.
  • Moderate Traffic Areas: Bedrooms and dining rooms see moderate use and should be cleaned
    every 6-12 months.
  • Low Traffic Areas: Guest rooms and rarely used spaces may only need professional cleaning
    once every 12-18 months.

Presence of Pets

  • Multiple Pets: Homes with several pets, especially those that shed fur, should aim for
professional cleaning every 3-6 months. Pet dander, hair, and odours can quickly accumulate,
    requiring more frequent maintenance.
  • Single Pet: Even a single pet can affect carpet cleanliness. A biannual cleaning schedule is
    usually sufficient.
  • No Pets: Without pets, you can extend the cleaning frequency to once a year or even 18
    months, depending on other factors.

Carpet-Cleaning

Wool Carpets

Wool is durable but prone to retaining dirt. Professional cleaning every 6-12 months is advisable to keep wool carpets in top condition.

Synthetic Carpets

Materials like nylon or polyester are more resistant to stains and can often go 12-18 months between professional cleanings, barring any major spills or high traffic.

Delicate or Antique Carpets

These require specialised care. Consult a professional for specific recommendations, but typically, annual cleaning is recommended to preserve their quality.

General Cleaning Guide

Based on the above factors, here's a handy guide to help you determine the optimal cleaning
schedule for your carpets:

- High Traffic + Pets (Multiple): Every 3-4 months
- High Traffic + Pets (Single): Every 4-6 months
- High Traffic + No Pets: Every 6 months
- Moderate Traffic + Pets (Multiple) Every 6 months
- Moderate Traffic + Pets (Single) Every 6-9 months
- Moderate Traffic + No Pets: Every 9-12 months
- Low Traffic + Pets (Multiple): Every 9-12 months
- Low Traffic + Pets (Single): Every 12 months
- Low Traffic + No Pets Every 12-18 months

Additional Tips for Carpet Maintenance

Regular Vacuuming: Vacuum your carpets at least once a week, more frequently in high traffic
areas or if you have pets.

Spot Cleaning: Address spills and stains immediately to prevent them from setting. Use
appropriate cleaning products for your carpet type.

Protective Measures: Use doormats at entryways, and consider area rugs in high traffic zones to
minimise wear on your carpets.

Professional Consultation: Always consult with a professional carpet cleaner for tailored advice
based on your specific circumstances.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure that your carpets remain clean, fresh, and in good
condition for years to come. Regular professional carpet cleaning not only enhances the appearance of
your home but also contributes to a healthier living environment by reducing allergens and bacteria
trapped in carpet fibres.

Investing in the right care for your carpets is an investment in your home’s comfort and value. So,
mark your calendars and keep your carpets looking their best!

Keeping Pet Odours Out of Carpets

As a pet owner, there's nothing more rewarding than the companionship and joy our furry friends
bring into our lives. However, one of the less glamorous aspects of pet ownership is dealing with
the inevitable odours and stains that can accumulate, especially on carpets. Whether it's a new
puppy still learning the ropes or an older pet with occasional accidents, keeping your home
smelling fresh and your carpets looking clean can be a challenge. Here are some effective tips and
solutions to help you manage pet-related odours and stains on your carpets.

Act Quickly on Accidents

The faster you respond to a pet accident, the easier it will be to clean up and prevent odours from
setting in. Blot the area immediately with paper towels or a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as
possible. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push it deeper into the carpet fibres.

Invest in an Enzyme Cleaner

Enzyme-based cleaners are specifically designed to tackle pet stains and odours. They work by
breaking down the proteins found in urine, faeces, and vomit, eliminating both stains and smells at
the molecular level. Look for enzyme cleaners at your local pet store or online and follow the
instructions for best results.

Regular Carpet Cleaning

Routine carpet cleaning is crucial for maintaining a fresh and clean home environment. Here are
some tips for regular maintenance:

  • Vacuum your carpets at least twice a week to remove pet hair, dander, and dirt.
  • Deep clean your carpets every 3-6 months using a carpet cleaner or by hiring professional
    services.

Many carpet cleaners have pet-specific formulas that are more effective at removing pet-
related stains and odours.

Preventative Measures

Taking some preventative measures can minimise the risk of stains and odours:

  • Train your pets: Consistent training can reduce the number of accidents your pets have indoors.
  • Use washable rugs: Place washable rugs in high-traffic areas and spots where accidents are
    more likely to happen.
  • Groom your pets regularly: Regular grooming can reduce shedding and the amount of dirt your
    pet brings into the house.

Professional Help

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, certain stains and odours may persist. In such cases, it might
be worth investing in professional carpet cleaning services. Professionals have specialised
equipment and cleaning solutions that can effectively tackle even the toughest pet stains and
odours.

Dealing with pet odours and stains on carpets can be a daunting task, but with the right approach
and tools, it's manageable. Acting quickly on accidents, using effective cleaning solutions, and
maintaining a regular cleaning routine can keep your carpets looking and smelling fresh.
Remember, the key is consistency and using the right products that are safe for both your pets and
your carpets. With these tips, you and your furry friends can enjoy a clean and comfortable home
environment.

That's us now half way through the programme of the Commonwealth games in Glasgow 2014 and haven't Scotland done well. We have surpassed the record of 33 medals set in Edinburgh 1986, currently on 39  with 13 on them being gold. Hopefully with the next few days of competition we can add to this tally, to make it our greatest games ever.

They have been some great performances so far; double gold for Neil Fachie & Craig MacLean on the track cycling, gold for both Hannah Miley & Ross Murdoch in the swimming but are favorite so far has to be the bronze medal Erraid Davis picked up in the SB9 100m Breaststroke on Sunday night.

Best of luck team Scotland for the rest of the games.

We know that ketchup is a great addition to many meals and is especially tasty on chips! We also know that sometimes ketchup can spill and land right on our favourite clothes, that's why we have put together come top tips on how to salvage your clothing.

What You Will Need:

- Spoon
- Water
- Stain Remover
- Liquid Detergent
- Mild Bleaching Agents Such As Hydrogen Peroxide, White Vinegar & Lemon Juice (for white or colour-fast clothing)

How To Remove The Stain

  • Remove any ketchup that is laying on the surface of the stain. This is best done with the back of a spoon to ensure that none of the clothing fibres are damaged.
  • Pour water through the back of the stain to force out any excess ketchup out of the fabric. Do not apply water through the front as this will push the stain further into the clothes.
  • Use a liquid washing detergent on the stain, rub it into the clothing in a circular motion working from the outside of the stain towards the middle. This way the stain will not be spread further.
  • If it is white or colour-fast clothing you may need to apply a mild bleaching. To do this you should use a sponge and rinse thoroughly after applying.
  • Hold the stain towards the light, if the stain is still showing, or there is a slight discolouring repeat the above steps.
  • Apply a stain remover and let it sit on the stain for at least 5 minutes. This ensures that the stain remover will penetrate the stain fully.
  • Wash your clothing as normal, but make sure you check the stain has gone before drying as when dry stains can often be permanent.
  • If the stain is being stubborn and is still showing, re-add the detergent and leave for 30 minutes . Then if need be reapply stain remover and launder the clothing.

We think that fabric protectors are important!

Carpet protection is a great way to protect an expensive investment. Once you have taken the time and trouble and expense of installing a carpet it only makes sense to ensure that they are kept looking new.  People often question if they work. Through our experience we can confidently assure you that yes they do!  There are many benefits to this service which is why we provide it to all of our customers.

Below are some of the reasons we think protectors are a good for stain prevention.

Cleaning Repel Protectant will give your carpets and upholsteries some much needed additional protection from wet and dry spillages, not to mention some piece of mind. This means that your carpets will be more stain resistant, easier to vacuum and they will stay clean for longer periods of time. Here are the main benefits:

  • Easy Clean- Our product helps to repel oils and and water based stains grabbing hold of the carpet fibres which makes cleaning the fabrics is quick and easy.
  • More Time- Due to the stain blocking features of the protector mean that you have more time to deal with any kind of spillage. Although the materials can still affect the carpet we are able to remove any initial rushed panic which can occur when spilling accidents happen.
  • Harder to Stain- The carpet protection provides easy maintenance as it is hard for dirt and grime to attach to the fibres in your carpet. This means more effective and less frequent, easier vacuuming.
  • Looking New-  This protecting solution provides a great barrier to dirt and potential spills which keeps you carpet looking better for longer

The Technical Bit About Carpet And Upholstery Protectors

Unfortunately accidents do happen, and this is something we can't prevent but is something we can  help you to prepare for. Different protectors have different fluoro-chemical technology and therefore, perform differently. Our protector helps to prevent any harsh and long lasting damage to your carpet. Carpet protector delivers its protection by forming a molecular shield around each carpet fiber. The shield lowers the surface energy of the carpet fibers causing them to repel liquid spills and dust and dirt. This helps prevent dirt and stains from being ground into or absorbed by the fibres. The protective barrier helps to provide easy cleaning without permanent damage to your upholsteries. The protective coating also provides a non-stick like surface but it does have some limits. Certain products such as red wine cannot be left untreated even on protected carpets as this will leave a mark, but you will have more time to clean the spill and better chance to find what is the best way to do so.

Protect your carpets from grit and snow stains

It may be early February when we are all dreaming of summer but unfortunately we just can't escape the snow. It may seem great to your children who get to enjoy a few days off school but it's not so great for the traffic or your beautiful carpets.

With even more snow forecast for the next few weeks we thought we would share with you some of our top tips to make sure your carpet isn't ruined.

The grit and salt that is used to clear our roads in this weather is unfortunately not great for our carpets. After the winter period we often go to homes where they have damaged the carpet fibres and cause patchy colour loss.

In this weather it's so important that you make sure your carpets are protected. One of the best ways you can do this is by preventing the snow and grit getting into your home in the first place. If you don't normally take off your shoes as you walk in the door then now's the time to do it. Dig out your Christmas slippers to stop the grit and salt being trampled in.

Want to extend the quality and life of your carpets?

We have complied our top 5 simple carpet cleaning tips to help you keep your carpets cleaner for longer.

1. Vacuum Regularly

We know it's an obvious one, but vacuuming regularly with a powerful cleaner helps prevent dirt from trampling into the back of the carpet where it will wear away the fibres.

2. Get a New Doormat

A good doormat will help prevent the dirt from trampling in, in the the first place. Ideally tou need a coir one outside and an absorbent cotton one inside. Don't forget to clean them both every week.

3. Clean Up Spills Properly

The trick is to soak as much of the stain out of the carpet as possible. Use a thick, folded, dry towel, place it on top of the stain and stand on it for 10 seconds. Rotate the towel and repeat 3 times. Dampen the stain with warm water and repeat the above with a clean towel. If its a stubborn stain you need to remove why not use our FREE famous spot remover?

4. Remove Dust Mites

Dust Mites produce waste which causes allergies and they love beds. Vacuum your mattress every time you change your bedding and if you're able to, use a dry steamer to help kill the mites themselves.

5. Call The Experts

If you think its time for a thorough clean don't forget to call the experts.
